Regular Events and Past Fundraising Activities
Gledhow Primary Summer Fair
All the fun of the fair! The usual school fair stalls including ‘soak the teacher’ (always the most popular), ‘hook a duck’ and ‘splat the rat’. Stalls setting crafts and food. Games, art activities and don’t forget the Gledhow Tea Rooms. In 2016 we had a Bake Off competition, which was really popular so may make a return.
We will start planning the summer fair in spring so look out for messages about helping out if you’d like to get involved.
Roundhay Primary Schools' Run for Fun
Ten local Primary Schools take part in a sponsored Fun Run one Saturday in June every year in Roundhay Park. With a lively atmosphere, it’s a great way to encourage children to take part in running. You can run 1km or 5km or both and grown-ups can run too. Don’t forget to do some training and maybe you’ll be able to keep up with the Roundhay Fox!
See current news and events page for details of this year’s event. Details go out in bookbags and on the school’s newsletter in the weeks running up to the event.
Christmas, Mothers’ Day and Fathers' Day Shops
In the run up to Christmas, Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day the PSA put on a shop for the children to buy a gift for their loved one. They can buy a present for £1 and have it wrapped up to take home. Look out for details in bookbags and the newsletter.
Christmas Discos
Always one Thursday after school in December, Mr Shuffles, a local entertainer and DJ comes along and thoroughly entertains the whole school (split into 3 age groups) over the course of the evening. Glow sticks, drinks, sweets and lots of dancing!
Welcoming New Reception Children and Parents
Members of the PSA always come along to the meetings that the school holds to welcome new parents . These take place after confirmation of school places has gone out and are usually held in June before children start in September. As well as talking to new parents about what the PSA does, we also give out badges for the children to wear at the Summer Fair before they start officially in September so that they are given a warm welcome!
A few weeks into the new term we also organise some coffee mornings for new parents after drop off. It is a chance to chat with each other and meet parents who have been at the school- they may be able to answer your questions!
Film Nights
Over winter we like to organise film nights, allowing the children to have a bit of that cinema experience of watching a film with their friends. But at a fraction of the price – it’s just £2 (including popcorn and a drink). We split KS1 and KS2 and show age appropriate films after school. . Films we have shown in the past include Looney Tunes (we showed a number of episodes back to back), Wallace and Gromit and The Muppets’ Christmas Carol. We need lots of volunteers to help organise and hand out the popcorn.
Sports' Evening
This evening is always lots of fun with usually over hundred children and grown-ups coming to join in the fun.Like most of our school events this is an opportunity to come to a family social event and mix with the whole school community.
At the sports' evening children get to play a variety of sports in teams of two with a parent or elder sibling. There is a range of indoor and outdoor sports to suit everyone, from tiddlywinks to blind penalty shoot out. The teams select their ten best scoring events and cross their fingers to find out if they are among the winners from each year group.
Quiz Night
The Family Quiz Night is always a good evening with pizza and drinks and some serious competition! With questions aimed to draw on the knowledge of all the family it’s a sociable Gledhow event. Even if you don’t come out top on the quiz, there’s always the raffle…
Fun Fridays
Once a half term we have a bun sale after school on Friday in the playground. A different year group each time takes charge of hosting the event but everyone is welcome and weather permitting the children get an extra chance to play out until about 4pm.
Things we have funded
Outdoor Classroom
Situated on the field, this canopy and benches is a great way to take learning outdoors - whatever the weather!
Leeds Rhinos Foundation
This partnership brought in lots of different sports teachers including dance, rounders and rugby. We also had visits from Leeds Rhinos players, the trophies and our favourite Ronnie the Rhino team mascot! We had discounted tickets for some Rhinos matches at Headingley Stadium.
PSA Piano
In Spring 2015, the PSA purchased for the school, a fantastic Kawai electric piano to replace the rather old one we had used for years. Staff are more than delighted with it. It is easy to move (without it going out of tune). The piano is used by the whole school and we hope that it stimulates and supports the musical talents of Gledhow children for many years to come.
Theatre Trips
In 2011, 2012 and 2015 we paid for (nearly) the whole school to attend the annual ‘Rock n Roll’ panto at City Varieties Theatre in Leeds City Centre.
These trips are major logistical feats involving closing some roads in the city centre so the buses can get close to City Varieties. It is an amazing day out and often something the children remember for years. The PSA aim to do this event every few years. In 2015 we decided to bring in Tutti Fruitti Theatre Company for the Nursery and Reception children who performed their ‘Snow Child’ production in our hall. Totally spellbinding!
