What is Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is a government grant, introduced in April 2011, that targets extra money at pupils from deprived backgrounds. Research shows that these pupils generally underachieve compared to their peers. The premium is given to schools so that they can provide additional support for these pupils and ensure they reach their potential.
The Government calculates how much Pupil Premium money each school receives by looking at the number of children at the school who are registered for free school meals, and at the number of children in , or who have been in local authority care. These are used as general indicators of deprivation. The school then receives a fixed amount of money per pupil registered for free school meals or in care. The Government do not dictate how schools should spend this money, but schools have to show that they are using it effectively to narrow the achievement gap between children from deprived backgrounds and others. School performance tables will now include information about the attainment of pupils from deprived backgrounds compared with their peers.
How We Receive the Pupil Premium
For every child who registers as eligible for a free meal, our school also receives £1,345 of extra Pupil Premium Funding. This can help to fund valuable teaching and learning support for our school (and is still paid to the school even if your entitlement ceases).
Children may be eligible for free school meals if their parents or carers receive any of the following benefits
- income support
- income based Job Seeker’s Allowance
- income based Employment and Support Allowance
- Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £16,190
- the guaranteed element of the State Pension Credit
- the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Universal Credit with an annual income of less than £7,400
This extra Pupil Premium funding could make a real difference to the quality of provision we offer. Examples of ways we have previously used this funding is to support with payment of trips, residentials, offer increased academic interventions and well being and self esteem support to young people.

We are very keen that all those who are eligible DO sign up, even if your child does not plan to take the meal, or if they already receive a Universal Free School Meal because they are in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2.
